About
Honduras:
The
full name is Republic of Honduras it holds an area
of 112,492 sq km (43,870 sq mi). The most recent
census revealed an estimated population of
6,249,598. The two major cities are Tegucigalpa
and San Pedro Sula. There are different ethnic
groups represented but the main ones are Mestizo
(90%), Indian (7%).
The official language is
Spanish but small minority groups also speak
Creole English and Indian dialects. Roman Catholic
faith is the predominant religion but in the last
decade an increased number of Christian,
indigenous and oriental forms of worship have
developed. The country has a Constitutional
democratic government but corruption has widely
spread within its ranks.
Most
of Honduras’ neighboring countries have adopted
the dollar as their new currency but Honduras is
still using the Lempira (equals $17.40 US),
because the country can not survive being 'dollarized'
in its current economical state.
Honduras is a
poor country, with one of the lowest GNPs in Latin
America; only Haiti and Nicaragua are poorer. It's
estimated that 70% of the population lives below
the poverty level. Close to 50% of the workforce
is unemployed or underemployed, the country has a
large foreign debt, and it imports more than it
exports.
